The Coat of Arms of the Dominican Republic is one of the most significant symbols of Dominican patriotism. Found in the center of the Dominican flag recognized by Dominicans worldwide the “Escudo” exemplifies our national pride bearing our motto “Dios, Patria y Libertad”… “God, Country/Homeland and Liberty”. It bears the same colors as the flag and each part of the “Escudo” has a significant meaning in our history, representing DR as a free, independent and sovereign island.

The escudo is supported by a laurel branch on the left which represents immortality, and on the right a palm branch represents freedom. The Escudo represents the Dominican Republic as a free state, independent and sovereign. The red is a reminder of the blood of the fighters who shed their blood for our independence, the blue symbolizes the protection of God while white is a symbol for peace and union among Dominicans. The Escudo also bears the bible and the Dominican Republic is the only country in the world to have a bible in its flag opened to the chapter of the Gospel of John 8:32, “the truth shall set you free”
